Breaking:Hear what Ohio State legend says about Buckeyes been the most talented team in program history……
Ohio State National Champion Cardale Jones joined his former head coach, Urban Meyer, on The Triple Option to reminisce about their 2014 journey. The podcast was filled with great stories and comparisons between the last Ohio State team to win a title and the current Buckeyes, who are chasing the National Championship over the next two weeks.
The former Buckeyes quarterback shared a ton of insight, but the most notable tidbit came around halfway through the video below when he talked about how the 2024-25 Buckeyes are the “most talented team on paper Ohio State has ever had.”
Jones added that he sees the selflessness, grit, and toughness that the 2014 team had. It took some time for this paper giant to click, but the loss to Michigan seemed to force the issue. This was a great episode, and Jones’ description of why talent isn’t everything in the chase for greatness bodes well for the Buckeyes of 2025.
Jones is famously recognized for his outstanding football career at Ohio State University and his path in the NFL. He joined Ohio State in 2012 but spent his first year redshirting. Initially, he played as a backup quarterback for Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett, but he had limited opportunities in his early years.
His legacy, however, was solidified during the 2014 season when he was called upon to start due to injuries late in the year.
After Barrett’s injury, he took the reins and led the Buckeyes on an unexpected postseason journey. Starting with the Big Ten Championship, Jones showcased an impressive performance, dominating Wisconsin with a 59-0 victory.
He then orchestrated a shocking upset against Alabama in the College Football Playoff semifinal, culminating in a national championship win over Oregon. Known for his powerful arm and calm demeanor under pressure, Jones gained national acclaim during this period. Despite his limited experience, his leadership and athletic abilities were noteworthy.
After declaring for the 2016 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills picked Jones in the fourth round. However, his NFL career did not mirror the impact he had in college. Jones mostly played as a backup quarterback with the Bills, Los Angeles Chargers, and Seattle Seahawks, struggling to find a starting position. Later, he played in the XFL for the DC Defenders in 2020 until the league suspended operations.
Though Jones’s professional career was relatively modest, his unforgettable contributions during Ohio State’s championship run continue to be significant in college football history.
