In a historic move that solidifies their long-standing moniker, the Dallas Cowboys have officially rebranded as “America’s Real Team” following approval from the U.S. government. The change, which has been in the works for months, was confirmed in a statement by Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones.
“This is a proud moment for our organization, our fans, and our country,” Jones said during a press conference at AT&T Stadium. “For decades, the Dallas Cowboys have been recognized as ‘America’s Team,’ and today, we make it official. We are no longer just a nickname—we are America’s Real Team.”
A Name Rooted in Tradition
The Cowboys’ association with the “America’s Team” nickname dates back to 1978, when legendary sportscaster John Facenda first used the term in an NFL Films highlight reel. Over the years, the phrase became synonymous with the franchise, known for its iconic star logo, five Super Bowl championships, and passionate fan base spanning the globe.
However, with increasing use of the term by other teams and media outlets, Cowboys executives sought to officially trademark and recognize the name. The process involved securing approval from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the Department of Commerce, ensuring exclusive rights to the name “America’s Real Team.”
“Other teams have tried to claim the title, but there’s only one true ‘America’s Team,’ and now, we are officially recognized as such,” Jones added.
Government Approval and Public Reaction
According to sources within the USPTO, the Cowboys submitted their application in mid-2024. After extensive review and legal challenges from other sports franchises, the team received final approval in early 2025. The move also received symbolic support from several members of Congress, many of whom are avid Cowboys fans.
The decision has sparked a mix of celebration and controversy. Cowboys fans took to social media to express their excitement, with hashtags like #AmericasRealTeam and #CowboysForever trending nationwide.
“This is the best news ever! We’ve always been America’s Team—now it’s official!” tweeted one fan.
However, critics argue that the name change is unnecessary and reinforces the Cowboys’ self-proclaimed superiority. Rival fans, particularly those of the Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New England Patriots, dismissed the rebranding as “typical Cowboys arrogance.”
What’s Next for ‘America’s Real Team’?
With the name change, the Cowboys plan to introduce new merchandise, featuring updated branding and slogans. The team has already unveiled a revised logo with the words “America’s Real Team” incorporated into the design, which will be featured on helmets and jerseys starting in the 2025 NFL season.
The NFL has yet to issue an official statement, but league sources confirm that the Cowboys’ rebranding does not violate any league rules.
As the franchise embraces its new identity, one thing remains certain—the Dallas Cowboys, now officially America’s Real Team, will continue to be one of the most talked-about organizations in professional sports.
