Kanye West, now known as Ye, has once again ignited controversy with his recent remarks following Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime performance. While he lauded Lamar’s show as his “favorite halftime show since the Michael Jackson era,” Ye’s subsequent comments have overshadowed his praise.
In a video shared on social media, Ye expressed admiration for Lamar’s performance, highlighting its simplicity and the impactful use of visuals during the rendition of “HUMBLE.” He noted the audience’s enthusiastic response and emphasized the show’s freshness and Lamar’s vocal prowess. However, Ye’s commentary took a contentious turn when he delved into the dynamics between prominent Black artists.
Drawing a parallel between Drake and the disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly, Ye stated, “One Black superstar is in jail. The next Black superstar is on stage. They take one rapper to take another rapper down. You gotta remember Drake was almost like the new generation R. Kelly.” This comparison has been met with widespread criticism, given R. Kelly’s convictions for serious crimes, including racketeering and sexual exploitation.
Ye’s remarks also touched upon the ongoing feud between Lamar and Drake, which intensified after Lamar’s track “Not Like Us” became a defining diss track in their rivalry last year. The song, which accused Drake of cultural appropriation and other allegations, won multiple Grammy Awards and was a focal point of Lamar’s Super Bowl setlist.
In the same discourse, Ye addressed the legal troubles of Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is currently incarcerated awaiting trial on charges including sex trafficking and racketeering. Ye has been vocal in his support for Combs, urging former President Donald Trump to intervene and calling out the entertainment industry for its perceived silence. He criticized celebrities for not speaking out, stating, “ALL THESE CELEBRITY N—-S AND BITCHES IS P—Y YALL A WATCH OUR BROTHER ROT AND NEVER SAY S–T.”
These developments come on the heels of Ye’s recent social media activity, where he posted a series of antisemitic and offensive messages, including expressions of admiration for Adolf Hitler and self-identifying as a Nazi. These actions led to his departure from the platform X (formerly Twitter), following a warning from the platform’s owner, Elon Musk.
Ye’s pattern of controversial behavior has led to significant personal and professional repercussions. His ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, has reportedly implemented strict rules regarding his access to their children in light of his recent actions. Additionally, Ye has faced substantial financial losses, including the termination of lucrative partnerships with major brands such as Adidas, Balenciaga, and Gap, following his previous antisemitic remarks.
The rapper’s recent comments have further strained his relationships within the music industry and beyond. His comparison of Drake to R. Kelly has been particularly divisive, with many criticizing the insensitivity and potential harm of such statements. As Ye continues to navigate the fallout from his actions, the impact on his legacy and future endeavors remains uncertain.
