Matt Haywood happy to embrace the pressure of Leeds Knights' NIHL National title bid

Veteran center Matt Haywood has been a cornerstone of the Leeds Knights since his arrival in 2022. Now, as the team continues to thrive, Haywood expresses his satisfaction in mentoring the next generation of players and witnessing their growth on and off the ice.

Haywood joined the Knights after a 12-year tenure with the Glasgow Clan, bringing with him a wealth of experience and leadership. His role in Leeds has been pivotal, not just in terms of performance—amassing 83 goals and 144 assists in 120 games—but also in guiding younger teammates through the rigors of professional hockey

One of the key aspects of Haywood’s contribution has been his mentorship of emerging talents like Fin Bradon, Oli Endicott, and Innes Gallacher. These young players have become integral parts of the team’s lineup, showcasing the depth and potential that Haywood has helped cultivate

Head coach Ryan Aldridge has lauded Haywood’s influence, stating, “He’s probably the perfect person for our group—a great guy, very experienced on the ice, a very intelligent hockey player. He’s really good with our younger guys and good with me—just somebody that we love having around, want around, and have to have around”

Haywood’s leadership extends beyond his on-ice performance. He has been instrumental in fostering a culture of camaraderie and resilience within the team. Reflecting on the team’s dynamics, Haywood remarked, “We’ve got a team full of leaders. I guarantee that within the next 10 years or so, even if they are not at Leeds, they will all be leaders in their own right”

As the Knights pursue further success, Haywood remains committed to supporting his teammates and ensuring the team’s continued growth. His willingness to embrace a mentorship role underscores his dedication to the sport and the future of the Leeds Knights.

With a strong foundation and a roster brimming with talent, the Knights are well-positioned for continued success, thanks in no small part to Haywood’s leadership and vision.
