Ohio State ranks as America’s most popular college marching band in study

Ohio State University has ranked as America’s most popular college marching band in recent study.

Betway Insider, a sports betting website, analyzed social media data on the 66 American college marching bands that perform at sporting events and an Instagram and/or TikTok account to find out which are the “most popular.”

The study, published in February, compiled the number of followers each marching band has on social media, then determined how much engagement, such as likes and comments, each band has relative to its follower count.

This data was then indexed and each band was given a ranking. Ohio State University’s marching band took the No. 1 spot, with it having the largest social media following of any American college marching band, at a combined 586,000 followers on Instagram and TikTok.

“The band is one of the only all-brass and percussion college bands in the U.S. and is considered the largest of its type in the world,” the study stated.

While Ohio State had the largest following “by far,” its fan engagement rate was relatively low at 4.84%, the study found

The University of Minnesota marching band took second place, having a combined follower count of 17,910 and an engagement rate of 34.53%. In third place was the Varsity Marching Band of Pittsburgh – despite only having 2,167 followers, it boasted the second-highest engagement rate in the study (23.25%), helping boost its ranking.

Completing the top five was the Brigham Young University Cougar Marching Band and University of Michigan Marching Band.
