Yankees, Mets set New York futility mark
The New York Yankees and New York Mets have struggled of late, losing five consecutive games each.
While a five-game losing streak is not noteworthy in a vacuum, the timing of the Yankees and Mets’ futility is. As noted by Josh Dubow of the Associated Press, Sunday marked the first time that the two teams have had a five-game losing streak at the same time.
The two losing streaks are different. The Yankees, despite their five consecutive losses, remain tied for first in a competitive AL East. Their lineup has been the biggest issue as the Yankees entered Sunday with a .202/.311/.341 batting line, having scored three or fewer runs in six of their first 14 games. However, the Yankees’ 2.60 ERA is the second-best mark in baseball, helping to mitigate those offensive concerns.
Mets, Yankees heading in different directions despite simultaneous losing streaks
The Mets have similar issues. While their .242/.313/.366 batting line entering Sunday is certainly respectable; they have also scored three or fewer runs in all nine of their losses. The lineup has struggled since outfielder Juan Soto landed on the Injured List on Monday, scoring a total of 13 runs in their last six games.
Although Tim Britton of The Athletic reported that Soto is expected back in time for the Mets’ next homestand beginning on April 21, the Mets’ struggles go beyond his absence. They have been playing bad baseball, beating themselves with mental mistakes and an inability to hit with runners in scoring position.
The Yankees, on the other hand, have essentially run the same team back from 2025. That team led the majors with a .787 OPS before coming up short in the postseason.
