The Ohio State football team is getting ready to play in a historic venue on Saturday afternoon. They get to take on Northwestern at Wrigley Field. It’s going to look strange on TV, but it will be a lot of fun for fans to consume. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these players too.
Northwestern has struggled this season. They are just 4-5 on the season and have only won two games in the Big Ten. They aren’t expected to compete with the Buckeyes in this one. The talent is just overwhelmingly in favor of the Ohio State Buckeyes in this matchup.
Usually, when Ohio State has to travel to play Northwestern, the weather is a factor. That was especially true back in 2022, which was the last time the Buckeyes traveled to take on the Wildcats. That won’t be the case this weekend, so that really hurts Northwestern’s chances.
We’ll give you three bold predictions for this game. This week, all of the predictions will have to do with the Buckeyes. They are the story in this game instead of the Wildcats. The first bold prediction has to do with what Ohio State’s best player will do in this contest.
1. Jeremiah Smith will score at least twice for the Ohio State football team
At this point in the season, it’s pretty clear that Jeremiah Smith is the best offensive player the Buckeyes have. It’s a battle between Smith and Caleb Downs for who is the best overall player on the team. Regardless, he’s a focal point of what Ohio State wants to do on offense.
Smith is already the most prolific freshman receiver in the history of the Ohio State football program. He has broken all of the records that Cris Carter set back in the 80s. He’s the best weapon that the Buckeyes have in the passing game, surpassing Emeka Egbuka in that regard.
With how poorly Northwestern plays against top talent, Smith will score at least twice in this game. He simply cannot be covered one-on-one. If the Wildcats try to play a lot of man-to-man coverage without bracketing to his side, he will win that matchup almost every time.
Will Howard doesn’t throw a great deep ball though. He’s under-thrown Smith a few times on deep routes that could have resulted in touchdowns. Ryan Day has said it’s just a matter of getting his footwork cleaned up. Still, Smith can beat people on slants very easily.
