Ohio State AD Announces Decision on Ryan Day After Michigan Loss
On Saturday afternoon, Ryan Day and the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes fell to the unranked Michigan Wolverines at Ohio Stadium.
The Buckeyes entered this season-ending rivalry matchup as a 19.5-point favorite over the visiting Wolverines, but ultimately fell with a 13-10 final score at The Shoe.
With this loss, Day has now dropped four straight as Ohio State’s head coach against the archrival Michigan program. Even with a far more talented roster in 2024, the Buckeyes’ program leader was unable to get the job done yet again.
Despite Ohio State’s 10-2 record and a likely trip to the 2024 College Football Playoff, speculation around Day’s job security began swirling after this most recent loss to the rival Wolverines.
But on Sunday evening, Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork announced a clear decision on Day’s future as the Buckeyes’ head coach.
“Our full focus right now is on the College Football Playoff and making a strong run,” Bjork said in a statement on Sunday, via The Columbus Dispatch. “We have a ton to play for. We have a great team made up of talented players and great young men. Coach Day does a great job leading our program. He’s our coach.”
Everybody wants to win this game in the worst way, and nobody wants to win it more than we do. It’s our No. 1 goal every year,” Day said after the Michigan loss. “And so when you don’t do that, there’s disappointment and frustration. And so, I don’t blame anybody for being upset. I’m upset more than anybody. And those players are too, and the coaches and everybody that goes at it. We know what we’re getting ourselves into here.”
In previous seasons, this season-finale loss to Michigan would’ve eliminated Ohio State from College Football Playoff contention. But with this year’s expanded 12-team field, the Buckeyes are likely to earn a spot as a 10-2 finisher in 2024.
Before Saturday’s loss to Michigan, the Buckeyes’ only loss of the year came at the hands of the No. 1 Oregon Ducks in a one-point contest at Autzen
Stadium. Oregon will now face off against Penn State in the Big Ten Championship Game.
