Final thoughts; How has Michigan turned The Game into a nightmare for Ohio State…Read More
Final thoughts on Michigan’s 13-10 victory against No. 2 Ohio State and a season that, from beginning to end, refused to go the way anyone expected:
1. I’ll tell you where my mind was at with 8 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Davis Warren had just thrown an interception to Jack Sawyer in the end zone on first-and-goal from the 3-yard line. Tight end Hogan Hansen was open, but Sawyer read the play, backed out of his pass rush and snatched the ball out of the air. That’s when I thought, “OK, this isn’t happening,” and started making my way down to the field.
I was expecting the story to be that the Wolverines fought hard, left the Horseshoe with their heads held high but made one too many mistakes to upset the No. 2 team in the country. Ryan Day was going to get that much-needed win against Michigan in completely unimpressive fashion. The Wolverines were going to find solace in making Ohio State sweat for 60 minutes.
That’s not what happened. No matter how many opportunities Michigan gave Ohio State to win, the Buckeyes seemed determined to give Michigan one more. I was walking down through the stands and heard the air leave the stadium when Kalel Mullings broke away from a tackle on third down and escaped for 27 yards. I passed a line of police officers on bicycles and remember thinking, “Wow, that’s a lot of bikes.” I watched Michigan’s sideline going nuts after Dominic Zvada’s go-ahead field goal and Will Howard’s fourth-down incompletion. And I was standing a few feet from Sherrone Moore’s postgame TV interview when the commotion broke out behind us.
