Angel Reese: Lady Giannis? – Letters from a Sports Fan

I prefer to be thorough when scouting/evaluating talent, however, there are those rare occasions when something about an athlete will come to me immediately.

This happened when I was scouting Angel Reese recently — check out my scouting report of Angel here. The video was about 10 minutes, but after watching the first two and a half minutes, the player who came to mind immediately was Giannis Antetokounmpo. As I continued to watch, I found a lot of similarities in the games of the LSU Lady Tigers forward and the Milwaukee Bucks forward.

They’re both tall, extremely lengthy, and rangy. They handle the ball well, almost like point guards. Their long strides when they dribble makes their path to the basket shorter. They attack the basket aggressively; they’re monsters on the boards. They’re two-way players who can guard multiple positions.

I’ve also noticed they both shy away from taking jump shots, preferring to attack the basket and using the face-up game.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with that style of play in general, but players who rely on that tend to be poor or mediocre shooters. They’re both shaky at best from the free throw line.

Of course, Giannis is stronger. He’s more explosive and athletic, and while I have seen some good, timely passes from Angel occasionally, Giannis facilitates more. Angel utilizes the low post game more.

On a side note, her ability to maneuver her body in certain angles and move her arms under defenders to make difficult shots in the paint reminds me of NBA Hall of Famer Kevin McHale.

Finally, I’ve seen mock drafts predicting who will be taken with the lottery picks in next year’s WNBA draft. Most expect Iowa’s Caitlin Clark and UConn’s Paige Bueckers to be the first two.

From what I’ve seen, you can’t go wrong with either one, but I wouldn’t rule out Angel. The only thing that might hurt her chances of being a lottery pick are the perhaps personal matters she dealt with early on.

Some teams do take that in account, and this is why some boards are predicting her to slide in the draft, but even if isn’t a lottery pick, I still think she will go in the first round.

Whoever picks her, I think they’re getting a female equivalent of the “Freak” in the “Bayou Bunny”.
