Angel Reese makes WNBA history with record-breaking performance against the Minnesota Lynx

Angel Reese is strengthening her case for WNBA Rookie of the Year.

Angel Reese has etched her name into WNBA history books, setting a new league record for the most consecutive games with a double-double in a single season. The 22-year-old Chicago Sky forward achieved this incredible milestone in Sunday’s 70-62 loss to the Minnesota Lynx, marking her 10th straight game with double figures in both points and rebounds.

Reese’s record-breaking performance saw her score 10 points and snatch 17 rebounds, surpassing the previous record held by Candace Parker, who managed nine consecutive double-doubles during the 2015 season with the Los Angeles Sparks. Notably, Parker was 29 and in her eighth season when she set the bar, making Reese’s achievement at such a young age even more impressive.

With just over a minute left in the game, Reese needed three points to secure her double-double. She showcased her relentless determination by rebounding her own missed shots in the paint and finally scoring with 40.1 seconds remaining. A subsequent loose ball foul with 23 seconds left gave her two free throws, and despite missing the first, she nailed the second to clinch the record.

Reese’s historic performance was of little use

“Just proud of her. Proud of what she does,” Sky coach Teresa Witherspoon said post-game. “I’m sure she would say the win was more important. She’s going to continue doing what she does. It’s who she is. She’s going to always come out and play hard and confident, and give you everything she has. She’s the hardest person on herself. I’m proud of her and what she continues to do.”

Despite Reese’s historic performance, the Sky fell to the Lynx, with Chennedy Carter leading the team with 15 points and Lindsay Allen contributing 13. Rookie Kamilla Cardoso also grabbed 10 rebounds. The Sky struggled in the fourth quarter, getting outscored 18-5 and dropping to a 6-11 record for the season.

The Lynx, now boasting a 14-4 record and tying the Connecticut Sun for the league’s second-best record, were led by Kayla McBride’s 16 points. Napheesa Collier added 13 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists.

Reese’s career is just beginning

While Parker still holds the WNBA record for the most consecutive double-doubles overall with 12, set between the 2009 and 2010 seasons, Reese is within striking distance. She previously set the rookie record with seven consecutive double-doubles on June 20 against the Dallas Wings, surpassing marks set by Tina Charles (2010) and Cindy Brown (1998).

The rookie record for total double-doubles in a season is 22, held by Charles. With 11 double-doubles so far and 23 games remaining, Reese is on pace to challenge that record as well.

Next up for the Sky is a road game against the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday, while the Lynx head to Phoenix for a Monday night clash with the Mercury.
