Booger McFarland Predicts College Football Playoff Upset

The College Football Playoff quarterfinal round begins on Tuesday. ESPN’s Booger McFarland shared his prediction for the Allstate Sugar Bowl, which will pit the No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish against the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs.

Although ESPN BET lists the Bulldogs as slight 1.5-point favorites, McFarland gave Notre Dame the edge in a minor upset and highlighted two critical components for reasons for an upset.

McFarland noted that Georgia will not have its starting quarterback, Carson Beck, and said he believes the Fighting Irish’s offense will be able to run the football between quarterback Riley Leonard and running backs Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price.

In Georgia’s loss to Alabama in September, quarterback Jalen Milroe rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Leonard is just as dangerous in the rushing attack, compiling 751 yards and 15 touchdowns this year.

Among SEC teams, the Bulldogs are only seventh against the run, allowing 127.8 yards per game, and 10th against the pass, giving up 208.7 yards per game.

Without Beck in the lineup, Georgia will rely on redshirt sophomore Gunner Stockton at quarterback. Beck underwent elbow surgery last week and opted to declare for the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Sugar Bowl starts on New Year’s Day at 8:45 p.m. ET.
