Braves Reassess Closer Role for Raisel Iglesias Amid Bullpen Woes
The Atlanta Braves are reevaluating their bullpen strategy following a catastrophic ninth-inning collapse against the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 5, 2025. In that game, the Braves squandered a 10-4 lead, ultimately losing 11-10. Relievers Scott Blewett and Raisel Iglesias were primarily responsible for the meltdown, prompting manager Brian Snitker to announce a shift in bullpen roles. The Braves are now considering rotating relief pitchers in high-leverage situations to identify the most effective combinations.
Iglesias, who has been a reliable closer for the Braves in the past, has faced challenges this season. Despite a strong 2024 campaign where he posted a 1.45 ERA with 28 saves, Iglesias has struggled in save situations this year, allowing a 3.18 ERA and striking out only seven batters in 11.1 innings. This decline in performance has contributed to the team’s bullpen issues.
In response to the bullpen’s struggles, the Braves have called up veteran closer Craig Kimbrel from Triple-A Gwinnett. Kimbrel, a former Braves pitcher with 440 career saves, has been effective in the minors, posting a 2.00 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 18 innings. The 37-year-old’s experience and track record aim to provide stability to the bullpen during this challenging period.
Manager Snitker emphasized the need for bullpen experimentation, stating, “We’re going to mix and match, and guys are going to get a lot more opportunities.” This approach reflects the team’s commitment to finding the right formula to close out games effectively.
As the Braves continue to navigate these bullpen challenges, the performance of Iglesias and other relievers will be closely monitored. The team’s ability to adapt and find effective bullpen combinations will be crucial in maintaining their competitive standing in the National League.
