Braves Minor League Recap: Drake Baldwin drives in six runs for Mississippi

Two of Atlanta’s minor league squads were either postponed or suspended due to weather on Wednesday. But nevertheless, there was still plenty of action down on the farm for Braves’ farmhands.

(27-32) Gwinnett Stripers 3, (28-31) Durham Bulls 5
Ramon Laureano, CF: 3-5, RBI
Sandy Leon, C: 1-3, 2B, R
Yuli Gurriel, 2B: 1-3, RBI
Allan Winans, SP: 6 IP, H, BB, 8 K
Box Score

Gwinnett got a stellar start from Allan Winans, but failed to bring home the win on Wednesday night as the Stripers fell by a 5-3 final against Durham.

On the mound, Winans was fantastic, tossing six one-hit, scoreless innings while striking out eight. With the start, Winans has lowered his season ERA to 3.86 on the season.

After also being held scoreless for the first two frames, the Stripers offense provided Winans with a bit of run support in the top of the third inning. After Sandy Leon led off with a walk, Andrew Velazquez doubled him to third base. A Ramon Laureano single brought Leon home to make it a 1-0 Stripers lead.

Gwinnett added on to their lead in the top of the fifth inning. With two out in the frame, Eli White worked a walk and subsequently stole second base. That aggressive baserunning would pay off, as a Yuli Gurriel single into right field brought White across to score, making it 2-0. In the seventh inning, the Stripers added on, as Forrest Wall drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the Gwinnett lead to 3-0.

MLB Next Game – Atlanta Braves

Zach Logue came on to relieve Winans and managed to toss a scoreless seventh inning before running into trouble in the bottom of the eighth. All told, Logue allowed five runs in the bottom of the eighth, enabling Durham to take a 5-3 lead. And as the Stripers were unable to score at all in the top of the ninth inning, the Bulls took the game.

(25-28) Mississippi Braves 14, (27-25) Pensacola Blue Wahoos 6
Drake Baldwin, C: 2-6, HR, 6 RBI, 2 R
Yolmer Sanchez, 2B: 2-5, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R, Sac Fly
Cal Conley, SS: 3-4, 3 2B, RBI, 4 R, 2 BB
Ian Mejia, SP: 4.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
Box Score

Mississippi was on the right end of an all-out slugfest, beating Pensacola by a 14-6 final after outhitting the Blue Wahoos 16-11.

The Braves wasted no time in this one, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Justin Dean led off the game with a triple and Cal Conley followed that up with a walk. Dean would then score on a Drake Baldwin groundout to give Mississippi the 1-0 lead. In the next at-bat, Yolmer Sanchez scored Conley on a sacrifice fly to extend the Braves lead to 2-0.

Mississippi starter Ian Mejia allowed Pensacola to tie things up by allowing one run in each of the first two frames. However, that would be the only runs allowed on the day by Mejia across his 4.2 innings of work.

The Braves took the lead back in the top of the third inning. Brandon Parker started things off with a single and two batters later, Conley doubled him to third. Baldwin followed that up with a bases-clearing single to give Mississippi the 4-2 lead. Sanchez followed that up with a double of his own to score Baldwin to make it 5-2 before Tyler Tolve laced a ground-rule double to extend the lead to 6-2.

Mississippi wasted no time adding on to their lead, as they once again scored four more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Bryson Horne smashed a leadoff home run to make it 7-2 as Parker followed up with an extra-base hit — a double. Two hitters later, Conley laced yet another double — the second of three for him for the game — to plate Parker, making it 8-2. The Braves continued to pour it on, as Baldwin homered over the left centerfield wall to score Conley and make it a whopping 10-2 Mississippi in the fourth inning.

Things remained relatively quiet until the seventh inning when Pensacola tagged Mississippi relievers Trey Riley and Anthony Vizcaya for four total runs in the game to cut the Braves’ lead to 10-6.

In the top of the eighth, however, Mississippi got three of those runs back. Conley kicked the inning off with his third double of the night and proceeded to steal third base. Yolbert Sanchez then singled into center field to score Conley to make it 11-6. After Tolve walked, Geraldo Quintero tripled, clearing the bases and giving Mississippi the 13-6 advantage.

The Braves tacked on an additional insurance run in the top of the ninth, as a Baldwin groundout plated Brandon Parker to make it 14-6. That score would hold as the final as Mississippi reliever Jonathan Hughes came on in the final frame and sat down Pensacola in order to cap off the victory.

(28-22) Rome Emperors 2, (26-26) Winston-Salem Dash 6
Ethan Workinger, LF: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI
Kevin Kilpatrick Jr., CF: 1-3, R, BB
Drue Hackenberg, SP: 2.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 K
Box Score

It was a bit of an abysmal day at the plate for Rome on Wednesday as the Emperors were outhit 12-4 — and more importantly outscored 6-2 — by Winston-Salem in the loss.

Drue Hackenberg got the start on the mound for Rome and tossed a pair of scoreless frames for Rome to open the game. Meanwhile, despite getting a single in each of the first two innings, Hackenberg’s offense was unable to find any type of consistency, going scoreless as well.

Winston-Salem tagged Hackenberg for the first run of the game on a solo home run to make it a 1-0 lead. The Dash would open things up, scoring two more runs off the Emperors’ starter to extend the Winston-Salem lead to 3-0.

Meanwhile at the plate, Rome’s struggles continued as the Emperors would be sat down in order in each of the next three innings before finally putting up a crooked number in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Tim Borden II was hit by a pitch to open up the frame, Kevin Kilpatrick Jr. singled him into scoring position at second base. Sabin Ceballos grounded out, moving both runners up a base before Ethan Workinger doubled to unload the bases and cut the deficit to 3-2.

Rome reliever Cory Wall gave way to Elison Joseph in the top of the seventh inning and allowed the Dash to get both of those runs back, making it a 5-2 game. In the top of the ninth, Shay Schanaman replaced Joseph and gave up an additional run as the Dash extended their lead to 6-2 which would hold as the final as the Rome bats simply couldn’t get going.

(20-31) Augusta GreenJackets (24-27) Myrtle Beach Pelicans (POSTPONED)
Mother Nature got the best of this one, as Augusta’s matchup against Myrtle Beach on Wednesday was ultimately postponed.

(0-0) DSL Braves 7, (0-0) DSL Padres 3 (SUSPENDED)
Juan Espinal, CF: 1-2, 2RBI, R
Juan Mateo, SS: 1-2, RBI, R
Lewis Sifontes, SP: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, BB, K
Box Score

The first official game of the 2024 DSL Braves season was suspended, but the Braves showed up in full force, scoring seven runs across just three innings.

With starter Lewis Sifontes on the mound, the Braves found them in an early hole, as the Padres tagged him for three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead.

However, the deficit didn’t last long as the Braves were able to storm back to score seven runs in the top of the third inning. A bases-loaded walk by Michael Baez scored Hojans Hernandez to make it a 3-1 game while a line drive single in the next at-bat to plate Nixson Cueche and Carlos Monteverde to tie the game at 3-3.

Two batters later, Juan Mateo singled to plate Baez to take their first lead of the game at 4-3. Elio Campos drew another bases-loaded walk to score Espinal and make it 5-3 before a force out by Isaac Osorio scored Manuel Dos Passos to make it 6-3. Finally, Mateo scored on a throwing error to make it 7-3 which would hold as the game was suspended in the bottom of the third inning.
