NHL updates condition of referee injured in violent collision with player

An NHL referee is expected to recover after he was involved in a violent collision with a player.

The NHL said in a statement that Mitch Dunning is fully communicative and can move all his extremities following the scary incident in which Colorado defenseman Josh Manson slammed into him during Monday night’s game at Philadelphia.

Dunning was down on the ice for several minutes after the collision. The game was delayed as trainers attended to him.

“I just got back to the bench and next thing I know I looked out and saw Mans was kind of holding his face and the ref was on the ground,” said Colorado defenseman Cale Makar.

“You never want to see that happen, especially on an accident like that. Very tough. Hopefully he’s OK.”
