Breaking News: NRL Casualty Ward: Hynes, Koula set for surgery

Cronulla halfback Nicho Hynes will undergo surgery for an ankle injury suffered at training on Monday and is facing an extended stint on the sidelines.

“It has been confirmed that Nicho has a complete syndesmosis rupture, plus a tibia fracture to his left ankle,” Sharks head of performance Nathan Pickworth confirmed on Tuesday.

“He will undergo surgery tomorrow (Wednesday), with an estimated return to the field of approximately eight weeks.”

Manly fullback Tolu Koula is also set to undergo surgery and be sidelined until Round 25 with after picking up an MCL injury in his side’s win over the Cowboys.

The outside back had scans Monday to confirm the severity of the injury and will be out for six weeks.

Meanwhile NSW centre Bradman Best has declared he is fit to play in the Origin decider after being sent for precautionary scans on Monday morning.

The 22-year-old pulled up with hamstring tightness after Newcastle’s win over the Knights on Sunday.

“I just pulled up a bit tight from yesterday’s game,” Best said. “I flagged it with our physios and they obviously reported it to the Blues physios here. We’re all good.”

Best was selected to replace injured NSW star Latrell Mitchell, who suffered a Lisfranc injury in South Sydney’s win over the Eels and is facing 4-6 weeks on the sideline.

Mitchell was reviewed by a surgeon on Tuesday and a decision made to manage his left midfoot injury conservatively, meaning he will not require surgery.

The Rabbitohs said Mitchell would get another scan and review in a fortnight’s time to ensure the injury is progressing.

Maroons coach Billy Slater has been forced to revamp his backline for the July 17 Origin decider after Cowboys winger Murray Taulagi was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Taulagi, who suffered the injury in Saturday night’s loss to Manly, joins fellow Queensland winger Xavier Coates on the sidelines after the Storm star tore his hamstring last week.

Roosters forward Victor Radley has entered the NRL’s 11-day concussion protocol after being deemed a Category 1 HIA following an attempted tackle on St George Illawarra’s Christian Tuipulotu on Sunday at Allianz Stadium.

The Titans welcome Jayden Campbell (hand), Klese Haas (heel) and Phil Sami (calf) back for their showdown with the Eels while the Dragons get Raymond Faitala-Mariner (back spasms), Jesse Marschke (hamstring) and Jack Bird (ankle) back for their clash with the Broncos.

The Broncos have lost halfback Jock Madden to a hamstring injury but welcome back centre Kotoni Staggs after he missed the Panthers game for personal reasons and back-rower Jordan Riki from suspension.

Warriors fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and wingers Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Marcelo Montoya failed to finish Saturday’s match against the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium.

Nicoll-Klokstad injured his calf in the first half and came from the field in the 39th minute, with medical staff ruling him out during the break, while Watene-Zelezniak was deemed to be a category 1 HIA early in the second half.

Montoya battled on bravely with a groin injury before coming from the field midway through the second half.

Bulldogs second-rower Jaeman Salmon has undergone surgery to repair a displaced jaw fracture suffered in a head clash with Warriors halfback Te Maire Martin and will be sidelined for six weeks.

Further bad news for the Bulldogs following the NSW Cup game on Saturday with Englishman Ryan Sutton sustaining a tear to his patella tendon which will require a reconstruction while Blake Taaffe needs surgery on a syndesmosis injury and is looking at an eight-week recovery period.

Eels prop Junior Paulo suffered a Lisfranc injury in his right foot in the loss to Souths and will consult a specialist, with the club confirming on Saturday that he is likely to miss 8-10 weeks.

Paulo’s injury comes just days after the Eels announced winger Maika Sivo will miss the next six weeks of the season following a hamstring injury picked up in the Round 17 loss to the Knights.

The Fijian international suffered his latest setback as he returned from another hamstring injury which had sidelined him for several weeks.
