With the weather outside staying cold, the temps inside the Minot Auditorium were warmer as the court was occupied by eight girls teams in four games that started at 3 p.m.
No. 2 TGU 48, No. 7 Bishop Ryan 42
The Lady Titans won the tip, and turned the ball over. The Lions returned the favor. After trading turnovers and missed shots, TGU made the first basket in the game at the 6:30 mark and led 4-2 until a 3-pointer by Bishop Ryan for the 5-4 Lions lead.
The game went on with lead changes in the tightly contested first quarter. The Lady Titans were able to slowly build a lead with rebounding and by making more shots than the Lady Lions.
TGU took a 17-12 to start the second quarter of play.
The Lions started the second with a 7-0 run to take a 19-17 lead. The Titans patiently worked their game plan from the first quarter and tied the game followed by a 4-2 run to end the first half with the 23-21 lead.
The halftime chat had both teams working their game plan as before with the Lady Titans putting together a short run to start the third quarter. Bishop Ryan mounted a high energy attack and improved their rebounding for second chance shots as well as limited their turnovers.
The Lions tied the game with just over one minute to play in the third and took the 33-31 lead with 50-seconds left. With one quarter to play, the Lions prepped for an upset of the No. 2 seed.
With 6:35 to play in the game, an injury on the court to a Lady Lion with Bishop Ryan leading 36-33 with the injury timeout taking both teams into the lengthy pause.
The fourth quarter got underway with TGU scoring to cut the Lions lead to one point. Bishop Ryan caught two quick fouls and the Lady Titans leaned into the foul issues to tie the game at 36-36 with 4:21 to play.
With 3:33 to play, TGU took the 38-36 lead only to see a 3-pointer from Bishop Ryan. The lead swapped between the two teams for the next two minutes. Free throws by the Lady Titans gave TGU the edge down the wire as the game slipped away from Bishop Ryan.
TGU advanced to the semifinals today and will play Our Redeemer’s.
No. 6 Our Redeemer’s 49, No. 3 Surrey 34
Our Redeemer’s won the tip and promptly hit a 3-pointer, stole the ball on the inbounds pass and hit another basket for the quick 5-0 lead. Missed shots and transition swaps milked the clock for the next three minutes when Surrey called timeout with the score still 5-0 for the Lady Knights at the 5:09 mark.
After the timeout, Our Redeemer’s hit two more 3-pointers to take an 11-0 lead- prompting another Surrey timeout at the 2:53 mark. At the 2:15 mark the Lady Mustangs finally found a bucket. The Lady Knights played at their own pace and took the 18-2 lead into the second quarter.
The Lady Mustangs came to life in the second quarter and outscored Our Redeemer’s 12-8 for the Lady Knights to hold the 26-14 lead going into the half.
The third quarter nearly sucked the life out of Surrey as Our Redeemer’s outscored the Lady Mustangs to start the second half and built an 18 point lead. The score was 42-25 for the Knights to start the final quarter.
With 2:46 left in the game, Our Redeemer’s held a 47-31 lead and started to work the shot clock to bleed time. The Lady Knights kept enough buffer and ran down the time to put the game away in the end.
Our Redeemer’s, with the upset, will play TGU in semifinal action today.
No. 1 Berthold 68, No. 9 Westhope-Newburg 48
The top seeded Lady Bombers hit a 3-pointer, stole a pass and had two free throws with one made for the 4-0 lead to start the game. Berthold kept that pace for the first three minutes of the game, posting a 10-0 run before the Lady Sioux found the basket.
Westhope-Newburg called a timeout at the 3:21 mark with Berthold leading 14-2, looking every bit the top seed. The Lady Sioux began to chip away at the lead. Berthold took the 18-16 lead into the second quarter of play.
The Westhope-Newburg girls came to life in the second quarter. The Sioux tied the game at the 3:50 mark and took a three point lead at the 3:10 mark 29-26 enroute to the 34-31 lead at the half.
Whatever the halftime adjustments and motivational speech was for the Lady Bombers, it worked as Berthold outscored Westhope-Newburg 37-14 in the second half of play and advanced to the semifinal bracket and will face Glenburn today.
No. 5 Glenburn 55,
No. 4 MLS 43
The Lady Panthers played inspired by the earlier upset on the day to post their own win over the higher seeded Lady Mavericks. Both teams are familiar with each other and played that way. Glenburn will face the top seeded Bombers in the second semifinal game today for a shot at the district championship on Saturday.
In the consolation bracket, the Bishop Ryan Lions play Surrey at 3 p.m. followed by Westhope-Newburg against MLS 20 minutes after the first game.
District 5 Girls Basketball Tournament – New Town
The District 5 Tournament quarterfinals took place in New Town at the events center with semi finals being played today.
No. 1 Kenmare-Bowbells 62, No. 8 North Shore-Plaza 17
The top seeded Lady Honkers were never threatened in the quarterfinal match and will play Powers Lake-Burke Central today in the semifinal round.
No. 5 Powers Lake-Burke Central 44, No. 4 Divide County 36
The fifth seed upset the fourth seed as Powers Lake-Burke Central outscored Divide County by eight to advance to the semifinal game.
No. 2 Tioga 71, No. 7 Parshall 58
In an offensive showcase, the two teams combined for 129 total points on the scoreboard. Tioga had the 13-point edge in the end and will play in the semifinal round today.
No. 3 Trenton 41, No. 6 Ray 38
Trenton defended their third seed with the win over Ray.
Divide County faces North Shore-Plaza in game one of the consolation bracket today while Ray takes on Parshall in the second game with the winners playing for region qualifying.
Kenmare-Bowbells faces Powers Lake-Burke Central in the first semifinal matchup while Tioga takes on Trenton in the second game with the winners playing for the region title on Saturday.
