Bruins’ Plans for Joonas Korpisalo Revealed
The Boston Bruins made a big splash on Monday night, trading Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators. In return, they added the 25th pick of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, Mark Kastelic, and Joonas Korpisalo.
Korpisalo is certainly the asset that has raised the eyebrows of Bruins fans the most from this trade. The 30-year-old goaltender was one of the worst goalies in the NHL last season, posting a 21-26-4 record, a 3.27 GAA, and a .890 SV%. With that, he will carry a $3 million cap hit for the Bruins over the next four seasons. That’s a big contract for a goalie coming off a tough year.
Due to the Korpisalo addition coming out of left field, many speculated if the Bruins plan to buy out or trade the veteran. However, those ideas can be forgotten.
According to The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa, a team representative confirmed to him that the Bruins are not planning to buy out Korpisalo. Shinzawa also shared that Korpisalo’s agent, Markus Lehto, sent an email saying, “Korpi will play for BOS.” This likely eliminates the prospect of a potential trade.
Shinzawa also noted that the Bruins hope goalie coach Bob Essensa will help Korpisalo bounce back. Essensa, of course, has had great success helping Bruins goalies reach their full potential.
Nevertheless, this report puts any possibility of Korpisalo getting moved, at least before the season, to bed. Bringing him in is undoubtedly a big gamble for the Bruins, and it will be intriguing to see if he regains his 2022-23 form from here.
