Srikanth succumbed to a 21-14, 21-12 loss against his fellow Indian badminton player in just 35 minutes.
Former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanthsuffered an opening round exit from the German Open 2025 badmintontournament after losing to compatriot Priyanshu Rajawat at the Westenergie Sporthalle in Mülheim an der Ruhr on Wednesday.
Kidambi Srikanth, 45th in the men’s singles badminton rankings, lost 21-14, 21-12 against world No. 37 Priyanshu Rajawat in a match that lasted 35 minutes. This was Rajawat’s second win against Srikanth in as many matches.
After winning his qualification matches on Tuesday to make it to the main draw, Tharun Mannepalli also progressed to the second round.
Up against Denmark’s Magnus Johannesen, Tharun Mannepalli lost the first game but fought back to win the match 10-21, 21-19, 21-19 in an hour and five minutes.
Meanwhile, India’s Rakshitha Ramraj and Unnati Hooda both advanced to the second round in the women’s singles section.
Rakshitha Ramraj held her nerve and overcame Malaysia’s Kisona Selvaduray 22-20, 5-21, 25-23 in what was a tight contest that lasted for an hour and eight minutes.
Unnati Hooda, who made the main draw after winning her qualifier on Tuesday, moved into the round of 16 after beating Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang 21-13, 21-17 in straight games.
However, Anmol Kharb succumbed to a 21-11, 21-14 loss against Japan’s Riko Gunji in women’s singles.
In the mixed doubles section, Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto beat Rohan Kapoor-Ruthvika Gadde 21-16, 18-21, 21-17 in an all-Indian first round match that lasted an hour and two minutes.
The opening day of the German Open saw Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy-Sai Pratheek K win their round of 32 men’s doubles match 22-20, 21-19 against England’s Callum Hemming-Ethan Van Leeuwen.
Priya Konjengbam-Shruti Mishra also won their first round women’s doubles match after beating the third-seeded Ukrainian duo of Polina Buhrova-Yevheniia Kantemyr 21-18, 17-21, 21-18.
