JUST IN:Floyd Mayweather Names Best Boxer in the World Right Now……..Read moreĀ

Floyd Mayweather has named his pick as the current top pound-for-pound boxer in the world. The title of boxing’s pound-for-pound champion is always up for debate, but many believe that the distinction belongs to unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.

To explain, the term ‘pound-for-pound’ is associated with a number of combat sports, including boxing, and is a way of measuring the skill levels of combatants across different weight classes into one ranking. So, if you’re at the top of these rankings, you are considered to be the best of the best.

Mayweather is certainly no stranger to the top of the sport, having reigned as undefeated champion in five different weight classes during his own career. While speaking during a recent appearance on the Unanimous Decision podcast, he shared his opinion on who the top fighter in the world is – and he didn’t choose Ukrainian superstar, Usyk.

According to Mayweather, that honour belongs to his fellow American Terence Crawford. He declared:

“I think Terence Crawford is the best boxer pound-for-pound in the world right now. He is in a great position and it is good to see. He has a beautiful family. We are all entitled to our own opinion.”

Although Usyk and Japanese knockout artist Naoya Inoue are generally seen as stronger contenders, a strong argument can be made for Nebraska native Crawford being considered as the top fighter on the planet.

The Case For Terence Crawford to be Considered the Best in the World

Crawford is one of three fighters, alongside Usyk and Inoue, to have become undisputed champions not once but twice in the four-belt era of boxing, having done so in the light welterweight and welterweight classes. All three men are undefeated at the pro level as well.

But what arguably favours Crawford is that he has been successful in more than two divisions, having become a titleholder in four weight classes. He was also the first of the trio to become an undisputed champion. His next fight has the potential to truly push him ahead, with a debut super-middleweight bout against current WBA, WBC and WBO titleholder (and fellow four-weight world champion) Canelo Alvarez.

If Crawford wins his planned clash against the Mexican superstar in September, he’d match Mayweather’s tally of conquering five different weight classes and cement himself as one of the greatest of all-time. Granted, the task will be a monumental one considering the fight is set to take place in Alvarez’s natural weight class, while Crawford will need to bulk up significantly for the fight from light middleweight, two classes lighter.

One would assume that Mayweather would still back his fellow American in this titanic bout, considering his backing of Crawford and previous comments about Alvarez in relation to when he fought and defeated the Mexican for the WBA and WBC super lightweight world titles back in 2013. If ‘Bud’ can pull off the upset win, he would instantly put himself into the conversation as one of the finest fighters of the modern era – alongside Mayweather himself.
