The Ohio State Buckeyes suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of the Michigan Wolverines just three weeks ago. Instead of tucking their tail and licking their wounds, though, the Buckeyes put together a dominant performance against the Tennessee Volunteers in the first round of the College Football Playoff, winning by a final score of 42-17. Ohio State raced out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter before Tennessee battled back to make it a 21-10 game at the end of the first half. The Buckeyes took over in the second half, though, and took a 42-10 lead before the Volunteers scored a late, insignificant touchdown. “Proud of the way they responded,” head coach Ryan Day said after the win, via ESPN. “You could tell from the jump they had a look in their eye that they were going to win this game…These guys have a lot of pride. I think this said a lot about who our guys are to be able to respond like that in a big way.” Following the game on Saturday night, the Ohio State athletics department revealed the attendance for the game. A staggering 102,819 fans showed up for, “a historic day in Ohio Stadium under the lights,” the account said.
Ohio State quarterback Will Howard is looking forward to the chance to face off against the Oregon Ducks for a second time after his game-ending mistake in the team’s 32-31 loss earlier in the season.
“Yeah, I’m excited, man,” Howard said. “It’s going to be a heck of an opportunity for all of us. We’ve all been looking forward to this one and for another crack at [those] guys. The way that last one ended doesn’t sit right with me. It still bugs me.” Ohio State and Oregon face off on New Year’s Day at 5:00 p.m. ET.
