Miami football players fight on sideline during Pop-Tarts Bowl vs. Iowa State
Fights aren’t all that uncommon in college football. Fights that start between teammates in a game are, however.
During the Pop-Tarts Bowl on Saturday, a pair of Miami football players got in a scuffle on the sideline, which was shown on the ESPN broadcast. It’s unclear as to what led to punches being thrown.
The fight was between defensive linemen Simeon Barrow Jr. and Marquise Lightfoot, the latter of whom appeared to throw the first punch after the apparent argument. The punch came on the sideline during the game against Iowa State.
Lightfoot, a true freshman, hasn’t accumulated any stats in 2024, whole Barrow Jr., a senior transfer from Michigan State, has been one of the Hurricanes’ most productive defensive players this season with 5.5 sacks and 28 total tackles.
Miami (10-2) has struggled defensively this season, which has leaked into the bowl game. Iowa State’s first punt came midway through the second quarter after scoring a touchdown on each of its first four possessions.
Thankfully for the Hurricanes, their offense with quarterback Cam Ward has been outstanding, and was able to match the Cyclones early, as the two teams were tied 28-28 approaching the half.
Regardless of the score, the sideline scuffle between defensive teammates is certainly not a great sign for coach Mario Cristobal and Co.
