Kirby Smart comments on Georgia’s game-winning fourth quarter drive against Texas

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart loved what he saw from Georgia’s game-winning drive in the fourth quarter.
Georgia v Texas

Georgia football played one of their best halves of football in the first half of their win against Texas on Saturday.

The offense may have started slow, but the defense played lights out and kept the Bulldogs int the game until the

offense got going. Their 23-0 halftime lead is something that may never happen again for Georgia against one of the

top teams in the country for quite some time.

And while that was extremely impressive, it wasn’t the most impressive thing Georgia did against Texas.

The Longhorns stormed back in the second half, trimming Georgia’s lead down to 23-15 after a controversial interception call by the officials. Georgia’s backs were against the walls, the Texas crowd was back into the game, and it was looking like there was a chance Georgia could lose this game.

But that is when the offense went on an 11 play, 89 yard drive to seal the game for Georgia in the fourth quarter.

This was by far the best drive of the season for the offense, a sentiment that head coach Kirby Smart shared as well.

“Yeah, that was special,” Smart said via dawgnation.com. “I told them after the game, the one thing that this offense has shown, and outside of at times being inconsistent, it’s some unbelievable resilience. When you think about the games we’ve been in, that we had to respond to a score. It seems like every time the second half somebody scores, they respond. I feel like that happened in Auburn, I feel like that happened in Mississippi State. I know it happened in Alabama, because it was the entire second half. So they show great resilience, and that is a quality, although there are higher ranking qualities possibly, that is a very high-ranking quality that not all teams have.”

Now we all know that Georgia’s offense hasn’t been good enough recently. Carson Beck has struggled with turnovers and his recievers have had their issues catching the ball as well. But the one thing this group is extremely good at is responding when their backs are against the wall.

And as Smart mentions, that is one of the best qualities anyone can have. Sure we would probably prefer the offense to be more consistent, because imagine how much better Georgia would be if they were. But while the group works on that, it is nice to know that we can have confidence in this group when adversity strikes.
So once the offense figures out how to be more consistent, this group (and entire team for that matter) is going to be very scary for any opponent to face.
