The 2024 college football season was historic. For the first time, the College Football Playoff included 12 teams instead of just four. Additionally, several teams switched conferences.

The Tennessee Volunteers were one of the teams that made history. They made their first appearance in the College Football Playoff due to the expansion. They finished the season with a record of 10-3 and were notable for their strong defensive performance. Tennessee ranked No. 6 in total defense, No. 29 in pass defense, and No. 10 in rush defense; the team ranked No. 7 in scoring defense.

David Pollack hosted a “State of the Program” podcast on his YouTube channel, “David Pollack College Football.” During the episode, he mentioned that one aspect of Tennessee’s performance this season truly impressed him.

Coming into the year, we were like, Tennessee’s front seven is going to be pretty good,” Pollack said Tuesday. “Now, guilty, never thought they were going to be that good. Like, they were freaking unreal. Like, I was blown away. We were all blown away watching the tape. We were like, ‘Holy cow, like, Tennessee’s elite up front.'”

The front seven was led by James Pearce Jr., who recorded 13 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks this season. The Volunteers had four players, each with seven or more tackles for loss. This strong performance contributed to the team ranking No. 8 in tackles for loss overall.

Tennessee’s front seven will have four returning starters next year. However, one of them will not be Pearce Jr., who is going to the NFL. Still, the Volunteers may be very good once again next season up front.

The Volunteers will begin their season on Aug. 30 with a game against the Syracuse Orange at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
