Ohio State rusher makes stunning transfer portal reversal

In a surprising turn of events, Ohio State running back Sam Williams-Dixon has withdrawn from the transfer portal, opting to continue his collegiate career with the Buckeyes. Williams-Dixon, who entered the portal in January, reversed his decision on February 12, 2025, as reported by On3’s Pete Nakos.

A three-star recruit from Pickerington North High School in Ohio, Williams-Dixon joined Ohio State with high expectations. During his true freshman season in 2024, he appeared in three games, accumulating 53 yards on seven carries. His initial decision to transfer raised concerns about the depth of Ohio State’s running back roster, especially with the departures of several key players.

The Buckeyes’ running back room has experienced significant turnover recently. TreVeyon Henderson declared for the NFL Draft, while Quinshon Judkins, after a standout season, also opted to pursue professional opportunities. Additionally, Chip Trayanum transferred to Kentucky in December 2023, and Evan Pryor moved to Cincinnati shortly thereafter.

In response to these departures, Ohio State actively sought reinforcements. The Buckeyes secured a commitment from West Virginia transfer CJ Donaldson, a versatile player who transitioned from tight end to running back during his collegiate career. Donaldson’s addition was anticipated to bolster the backfield depth.

Williams-Dixon’s decision to remain with the Buckeyes provides a significant boost to the team’s running back corps. With his return, Ohio State’s depth chart now features James Peoples, CJ Donaldson, and Williams-Dixon as the primary options heading into the 2025 season. This trio offers a blend of experience and potential, positioning the Buckeyes for continued offensive success.

The dynamics of college football have evolved rapidly, with the transfer portal becoming a pivotal element in roster management. Players now have greater autonomy to explore opportunities that align with their personal and athletic goals. Williams-Dixon’s initial decision to transfer, followed by his choice to stay, underscores the complex considerations athletes navigate in today’s collegiate landscape.

For Ohio State, retaining Williams-Dixon is a testament to the program’s appeal and its commitment to developing talent. As the Buckeyes prepare for the upcoming season, his presence will be instrumental in maintaining the team’s competitive edge. Fans and analysts alike will be keen to see how Williams-Dixon leverages this opportunity to contribute to Ohio State’s pursuit of another national championship.
