Orioles floated as possible landing spot for $100 million World Series champion

The Baltimore Orioles have made a few moves this offseason in free agency, but it won’t be enough to get them over the hump, especially after losing the American League Wild Card Series to the Kansas City Royals.

Tyler O’Neill, Andrew Kittredge and Charlie Morton were their biggest signings, but they failed to retain both Anthony Santander and Corbin Burnes.

While O’Neill can theoretically replace Santander, they need a frontline starting pitcher to replace Burnes.

Matt Snyder of CBS Sports picked the Chicago Cubs to sign former Oriole Jack Flaherty, but noted that Baltimore would be a good fit for the right-hander.

“I still think the Orioles need more in the rotation and it’s pathetic how relatively little they’ve done this offseason after two straight playoff failures. It’s becoming more and more clear that Mike Elias just likes team-building and doesn’t have what it takes to get a contender over the hump,” Snyder said.

Flaherty was traded to Baltimore from the St. Louis Cardinals at the deadline in 2023. He went 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA in Baltimore and was even moved to the bullpen.

However, he bounced back in a big way in 2024, going 13-7 with a 3.17 ERA in 28 starts with the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers. He also had a 3.1 WAR and struck out 194 hitters.

If he can stay healthy, he still has the potential to be one of the top pitchers in the league. The 29-year-old even pitched a gem in Game 1 of the World Series against the New York Yankees.

But the Orioles could benefit from having his presence in the rotation. Health is the key for him , but if he can stay off the injured list, he could be a solid replacement for Burnes.
