Shannon Sharpe Sends Stern Warning To Kirk Herbstreit Over ‘First Take’ Jab During CFP Game
Ohio State showed its loss to Michigan was a fluke by dominating Tennessee in the first round of the College Football Playoff, and Kirk Herbstreit defended their coach from the critics who suggested it might be time for Ohio State to shake things up after the upset. That included a dig at First Take, and Shannon Sharpe made it very clear he did not appreciate the comment while responding on Monday.
Ryan Day’s struggles against Michigan have been a hot topic of discussion during his time at Ohio State, and the issue was once again thrust into the spotlight when the Buckeyes capped off the regular season with a 13-10 loss at home to a Wolverines team that seemingly had no business making it a competitive contest in the first place.
That led to the latest round of Discourse concerning Day’s job security, and Stephen A. Smith (who implied Day should be worried about a potential loss in The Game close to four months before those fears were realized) suggested Ohio State would benefit from finding a new head coach if the team couldn’t at least be one of the last four squads remaining in the College Football Playoff.
On Saturday, the Buckeyes came one step closer to reaching that point with a 42-17 rout over Tennessee to earn the right to face off against Oregon on New Year’s Day, and in the closing minutes of the contest, Kirk Herbstreit defended the skipper from the vocal minority that called for his head after the loss to Michigan while going out of his way to mention First Take.
Herbstreit noted he couldn’t wait to see what the members of the show had to say when Monday rolled around, and he got his answer when Smith noted the former Ohio State QB twisted his words before Shannon Sharpe took full advantage of the opportunity to respond to Hebrstreit (as well as Chris Fowler, who caught a bit of a stray for being with him in the booth when he shared his thoughts).
Sharpe asserted he was doing what he could to bite his tongue during the segment that kicks off around the 3:45 mark in the above video but made it very clear he wouldn’t do so again if Herbstreit fired another shot in his direction, saying:
“If we’re going to be on the same team, if we’re gonna work for the same network, don’t do that.
Kirk, Chris Fowler, I promise you, if you ever mention any platform that I’m on again talking about ‘I wonder what they’re going to say as negativity,’ I promise you, ESPN ain’t got enough bosses to keep me off y’all for what I’m going to say. I’m going to let you all slide today…
