Stefanie Dolson Regret Having Contract With Washington Mystics

In the world of professional sports, few things are more impactful than the relationships and experiences an athlete has with their team. For Stefanie Dolson, a standout in the WNBA, her time with the Washington Mystics has been a mixed bag of emotions and reflections. Recently, Dolson opened up about her tenure with the Mystics, revealing regrets and what she wishes had gone differently during her stint in the nation’s capital.

Dolson was drafted by the Washington Mystics as the 6th overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft. Coming off an impressive collegiate career at UConn, where she helped lead the Huskies to two NCAA Championships, expectations were high for the talented center. She was seen as a pivotal addition to a team aiming to establish itself as a dominant force in the league. However, the journey did not unfold as smoothly as anticipated.

Reflecting on her years with the Mystics, Dolson admits there were several moments where she felt things could have gone better. “When I look back at my time with Washington, I can’t help but feel a sense of unfinished business. There were so many factors that played into the struggles we faced, and I often wonder what could have been if circumstances had been different,” Dolson shared in a candid interview.

One of the main challenges Dolson faced was the constant shift in team dynamics and coaching strategies. The Mystics underwent several changes in their roster and coaching staff during her tenure, which made it difficult to establish consistency. “Every season felt like a reset button was being hit,” Dolson said. “It’s tough to build chemistry and a solid game plan when you’re constantly adapting to new teammates and coaching philosophies. I think that instability really hindered our ability to reach our full potential.”

In addition to the internal changes, injuries also played a significant role in Dolson’s experience with the Mystics. Both she and key teammates faced numerous setbacks due to health issues, which disrupted the team’s progress. “Injuries are part of the game, but it felt like we were constantly fighting an uphill battle. There were moments when we had the potential to make a deep playoff run, but then someone would get hurt, and it would derail everything,” she recalled.

Despite these challenges, Dolson cherishes the personal and professional growth she experienced during her time with the Mystics. “I learned a lot about resilience and adaptability. Those were some tough years, but they made me stronger as a player and as a person. I’m grateful for the support of my teammates and the fans, who always stood by us, no matter what,” she noted.

However, the turning point for Dolson came when she was traded to the Chicago Sky in 2017. The trade marked a fresh start for her career and provided an opportunity to reach new heights. With the Sky, Dolson found a renewed sense of purpose and stability, culminating in a WNBA Championship in 2021. “Moving to Chicago was the best thing that could have happened to me. It gave me a chance to hit the reset button on my own terms and to be part of a team that truly clicked,” she said.

Even as she flourished with the Sky, Dolson couldn’t help but reflect on her time with the Mystics and what might have been. “There’s always that ‘what if’ lingering in the back of my mind. What if we had more stability? What if we had fewer injuries? It’s hard not to think about how different things could have been,” she admitted.

Dolson’s story serves as a reminder of the complexities and uncertainties inherent in professional sports. Her regrets are not rooted in bitterness but in a longing for what could have been achieved under different circumstances. “I don’t hold any ill will towards the Mystics. I just wish things had gone differently, for all of us,” she said.

As Stefanie Dolson continues to build her legacy in the WNBA, her reflections on her time with the Washington Mystics offer valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs that shape an athlete’s career. Her journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the enduring pursuit of greatness, no matter the obstacles faced along the way.
