Stunned, controlled chaos: What I’ll remember from Ohio State-Michigan
COLUMBUS, Ohio — When Ohio State lost to Michigan last year, I wrote about the postgame sprint to press conferences as the thing I would remember most from the hectic afternoon.
This year was no different, for far different reasons.
Ohio State lost to Michigan, 13-10, on Saturday in the most stunning sporting event I’ve covered in my young career. There were few results, I thought, that would shock me entering the game. We got one of them.
So as I tried to grapple with Ohio State’s passive play-calling and lack of imagination offensively, I had to grab all my stuff.
It was about negative 20 degrees (or at least, it felt that way) in Columbus on Saturday, so I made sure to bundle up, and realized with 45 seconds left in the game that I had to frantically throw it all on to head down for postgame interviews. It was poor planning on my part.
I threw everything into my backpack as quickly as I could, and then sprinted for the elevator. I made it, and ran into Bill Bender from Sporting News. He was a former mentor of mine while I was at Ohio University (he is also an alum) who now covers college football as a whole, and I had to help show him to the Ohio State press conference room.
We walked through the sea of despair, fans not saying much as they exited for their cars, or for warmth. We hypothesized about where Ohio State would rank in the College Football Playoff.
