Mathis had been committed to the Buckeyes since January and visited as recently as last month to see Ohio State’s win over Nebraska.

Before his decommitment, the 6-foot-6, 225-pound defender had been one of the Buckeyes’ nine pledges within the top-100 prospects in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the class of 2025. Mathis is ranked as the No. 67 overall prospect and No. 5 edge defender.

Penn State has been looking to flip Mathis since he visited Happy Valley earlier this year.

The Buckeyes can begin signing prospects as part of the top-ranked 2025 class in two weeks. The early signing period opens on Dec. 4.

Other defensive linemen such as Zion Grady, Maxwell Roy, London Merritt, Jarquez Carter and Trajen Odom. Grady, a native of Enterprise, Alabama, is the highest-ranked among them as the No. 74 overall prospect.
